The Best Body Composition Scales

Every one of these estimates your body fat from how a small current travels through you, which means they are all measuring hydration as much as anything else. Seven ranked on the only thing they are actually good for — trend.

Elise Hall, MDJune 21, 20265 min read

I want to be straight about the physics before ranking anything, because this category is sold on a claim it cannot support.

None of these scales measures your body fat. They pass a small, imperceptible current through your body and measure the resistance to it. Fat and lean tissue conduct differently, so the resistance carries information — but water conducts best of all, and hydration varies enormously with fluid intake, sodium, alcohol, exercise, the menstrual cycle and time of day.

So the body fat percentage on the display is an estimate from an algorithm, and against reference methods individual readings can be 4–5 percentage points out in either direction.

What that does not mean is that they are useless. A consistent series of measurements, taken under identical conditions on the same device, contains real information about direction. That is what you are buying, and it is worth having on a drug where a substantial share of weight lost is lean tissue — the argument in muscle is the whole game.

The rubric

  1. Consistency, which matters more than accuracy for trend reading.
  2. Foot-to-foot versus four-point measurement. Hand electrodes add the upper body rather than extrapolating it.
  3. App and trend display, since the trend is the product.
  4. Multi-user recognition, for households.
  5. Data export, so a clinician can see something useful.
  6. Additional measures of genuine value.
  7. Cost.

The ranking

1. Withings Body Comp

Best trend handling and data quality.

Four-point measurement, a genuinely good app with clear trend visualisation, reliable multi-user recognition, and export that produces something a clinician can read. Withings also has a track record in validated medical devices, which is not the same as this scale being validated and does say something about the company.

Where it falls short. Expensive. Some features sit behind a subscription, which is irritating on hardware you have bought. And no amount of design fixes the underlying bioimpedance limitation.

2. Tanita RD-953

Best measurement hardware.

Tanita has been making bioimpedance devices for clinical and research settings for decades, and the consumer models inherit that engineering. Four-point measurement across 2 frequencies, and segmental readings by limb — which is the closest a home device gets to telling you where lean mass is changing.

Where it falls short. The app is markedly worse than Withings’. Expensive. The segmental data is interesting rather than actionable for most people.

3. Garmin Index S2

Best if you already live in one ecosystem.

Solid four-point measurement with trend display, and the real advantage is integration — if your training is already logged in Garmin Connect, having weight and composition in the same place alongside your lifting is genuinely useful, because that pairing is the actual signal.

Where it falls short. Of limited appeal outside the ecosystem. Measurement quality is good rather than best-in-class. Expensive for what it is.

4. Renpho Elis 1

Best value by a wide margin.

Inexpensive, reliable, decent app, multi-user. The measurement is foot-to-foot rather than four-point, so upper body composition is extrapolated rather than measured — but for reading a trend under standardised conditions, it performs comparably to devices several times the price.

Where it falls short. Foot-to-foot underestimates upper-body changes. App shows more metrics than the physics supports, which encourages over-reading. Export is basic.

5. Etekcity Smart Scale

Cheapest usable option.

Very inexpensive, works, syncs to a phone, unlimited users. If the goal is a trend line and nothing more, this delivers it.

Where it falls short. Foot-to-foot only. Build quality reflects the price. The app displays a long list of derived metrics — visceral fat rating, metabolic age — that are extrapolations of extrapolations and should be ignored.

6. Eufy Smart Scale P3

Best display at a mid price.

Clear on-scale display so you can see readings without a phone, decent app, reasonable build. A sensible middle option.

Where it falls short. Same foot-to-foot limitation. Nothing it does is unavailable more cheaply or better elsewhere.

7. Handheld bioimpedance devices, as a category

Ranked last on fit.

Handheld devices measure across the upper body and extrapolate the legs — the mirror image of a foot-to-foot scale’s weakness, and no better.

Where they fall short. They lack the one thing a scale gives you for free: your weight, measured at the same moment under the same conditions. For home trend tracking, a scale is simply the better form factor.

Summary

Device Measurement App and trends Export Value Overall
Withings Body Comp 4-point Excellent Good Poor 1st
Tanita RD-953 4-point, segmental Weak Moderate Poor 2nd
Garmin Index S2 4-point Good in ecosystem Good Moderate 3rd
Renpho Elis 1 Foot-to-foot Good Basic Excellent 4th
Etekcity Foot-to-foot Basic Basic Excellent 5th
Eufy P3 Foot-to-foot Good Basic Good 6th
Handheld devices Hand-to-hand Varies Varies Poor 7th

Using one without being misled

Standardise ruthlessly, for at least 4 weeks before reading anything into it. Same time of day, first thing, after the toilet, before eating or drinking, bare feet, hard floor, not after alcohol or a hard session. A series measured any other way is noise.

Read the 4-week trend, not today’s number, and expect 1–2 kg of day-to-day swing from fluid alone. Judge nothing on fewer than 12 weeks of data. And never compare a reading from one device to one from another — the algorithms differ.

Expect creatine to show as lean mass gain. It draws water into muscle over the first 2 weeks, which is real and is not new contractile tissue — the creatine rankings explain the 1–2 kg that appears in the first fortnight.

Ignore “metabolic age” and “visceral fat rating” — both are derived from a signal already 4–5 percentage points noisy. They are derived from the same noisy estimate and add confidence without adding information.

What is actually better, and free

A tape measure at the waist, monthly, measured properly — a 5 cm reduction over 6 months means more than any percentage on a display. It predicts cardiometabolic risk better than weight and frequently keeps falling during a scale plateau.

A strength log, across 2 sessions a week. If your working weights hold while your weight falls, the composition is going the right way. That is the most reliable home signal there is.

Both, plus when to consider a DXA scan, are covered in how to measure body composition. If a daily body fat readout would make you anxious rather than informed, skip this category entirely and weigh weekly on an ordinary scale.

Questions I get about this month

Are smart scales accurate for body fat?
Not for a single reading. Consumer scales pass a small current through the body and estimate composition from resistance, which is heavily influenced by hydration — and hydration varies with fluid intake, sodium, alcohol, exercise, the menstrual cycle and time of day. Compared against reference methods, individual readings can be off by several percentage points in either direction. What they are reasonably good at is direction over time, provided you measure under identical conditions.
How do I use a body composition scale properly?
Standardise everything. Same time of day, ideally first thing in the morning after using the toilet and before eating or drinking, on bare feet, on a hard floor rather than carpet, before exercise and not after alcohol. Then ignore the individual numbers entirely and read the four-week trend. Comparing a reading from one device to a reading from another device tells you nothing, because the estimation algorithms differ.
Will a body composition scale show me if I am losing muscle?
Only crudely, and it is better than nothing. Lean mass on a bioimpedance scale includes water and glycogen, so a low-carbohydrate week or a dehydrated morning will show as lean mass loss that has not happened. A DXA scan is considerably better and still has that same limitation. The most reliable home signal that you are keeping muscle is that your working weights in the gym are holding while your total weight falls.
Do I even need one on a GLP-1?
No, and it can help if you already own one or you find data motivating. The two measurements that matter most are free: waist circumference, which predicts cardiometabolic risk better than weight, and a strength log. If a scale's daily body fat readout would make you anxious rather than informed, that is a good reason to skip the category entirely and weigh weekly on an ordinary scale.
